Leipzig is a city buzzing with sports and recreation. From professional football and hockey teams, to walking groups and gyms, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

About one third of the city’s territory is made up of green spaces, woodlands, parks, small gardens and allotments, and sports and recreation grounds.

Sports

Leipzig is home to several professional sports teams, all with dedicated fans, including football, American football and hockey teams. Why not check out:

Throughout the year, several of the larger sports grounds around the city also double up as facilities for events. You can find out about any campus activities, or group outings to sporting events, throughout the year in our events section.

Red Bull Leipzig

Red Bull Leipzig was founded on 19th May 2009 and successfully achieved promotion four times in seven years to reach the German Bundesliga in 2016.

Die Roten Bullen have gone on to qualify for the UEFA Champions League four times in five seasons of top-flight football.

Wellbeing

Getting involved with a sport or physical activity can be a great way to meet new people and stay active while you’re studying. Luckily, you’ll never run out of options in Leipzig.

There are around 400 different sports facilities in the city, including 80 sports fields, 150 sports halls, 28 bowling alleys, 21 tennis courts and 20 swimming pools and outdoor pools. And that’s not counting the gyms!

Take your bicycle and enjoy 400 kilometres of cycling paths all around Leipzig. The parks of the city have been deliberately made for running, walking or inline skating. If the water is your preferred area, visit one of Leipzig’s beautiful lakes or rivers to do sailing or paddling.

You can find information about all the sports and recreation groups in Leipzig on the Stadtsportbund Leipzig e.V website (German only) or talk to the Lancaster University Leipzig Student Support team on campus.
