Travelling to Leipzig
Travelling to your new home can seem like a daunting experience, but Leipzig’s transport links could not make it easier. You have several options for how to get to your accommodation and Lancaster University Leipzig.
Leipzig/Halle Airport is Leipzig’s own airport. From there you can get a 20-minute train to the city centre or take a 30-minute taxi journey.
If you choose to arrive from Berlin Brandenburg Airport, you then can get the fast Intercity Express connection between Berlin and Leipzig, which takes 1 hour and 15 minutes, from Berlin Südkreuz or Hauptbahnhof.
Another opportunity for you is to arrive in Germany via Frankfurt/Main or Munich. Both airport cities are connected with direct trains to Leipzig. Average train travel time is three hours.
Leipzig Central train station (Leipzig Hauptbahnhof) is in the city centre and is only five-minute walk from the campus. It is Europe’s largest railway station measured by floor area and connects the city to Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich and several other cities. The bus station is opposite Leipzig Central Station. From here, you can connect with trams, buses or taxis to reach your accommodation in the city.
Travelling around Leipzig
Leipzig is very pedestrianised, meaning you will be able to easily walk or cycle around this vibrant, compact city. The main shopping district is fully pedestrianised, and there are many cycling lanes throughout the city.
There is also plenty of public transport to help you get around. There are 13 tramlines running throughout the city, as well as 61 bus routes. What is more, as Lancaster University Leipzig student, you can use all public transport with your Student transportation ticket, called Deutschlandsemesterticket.
Purchase the local transportation ticket, also known as Deutschlandsemersterticket which provides travel on nationwide local busses, trams, S-Bahn, regional trains and selected fast trains throughout Germany
Annual ticket costs for the travel pass is €352,80 per Academic Year*.
You will be able to activate your ticket in the App LeipzigMOVE or get a smart card in the LVB Service Center. The compulsory amount of €352,80 will be invoiced by Lancaster University Leipzig along with the second half of your tuition fees in week 8 of classes. It is mandatory to have a local transportation ticket and it is not possible to opt out.

Trams and Buses
You can find in-depth information about the local public transport company and its offerings at www.l.de/verkehrsbetriebe-en . Your Travel Pass will be valid in the local tram and busses, so you do not need to buy another ticket for yourself.

Trains and Buses (long-distance)
One of the fastest ways to travel between cities is by train. You can book your train tickets online at www.bahn.com/en . Depending on how much time in advance you are booking your ticket, there are different options (Supersparpreis, Sparpreis & Flexpreis). Hopping on a bus is also a great way to travel greater distances.

Bikes
While not quite Amsterdam, Leipzig is most certainly a city of bikes. You can purchase a bike at Zweirad Stadler, Little John Bikes, RadFreund, RADHaus, Lucky Bike and many more locations. There are also frequent bike sales in the city where you can purchase used bikes for very reasonable prices or you could check www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de .
