In their final year of the Bachelor’s programme, software engineering students under the supervision of Dr David Georg Reichelt develop practical solutions based on real projects. In this way, they gain valuable experience in software development and optimally prepare themselves for starting their careers.
An outstanding example of this is the collaboration with Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB), the local public transport operator and pioneer in the use of open-source routing software. The backend of the journey planning in the LeipzigMOVE app has been based on this technology for years.
This year, the students were able to develop a prototype of a route search to make the existing open-source routing available as a web application as well. The prototype allows users to enter start and destination points and then displays the best route options using various LVB modes of transport – including a clear map visualisation.
With this project, the students are making an active contribution to the digital transformation of public transport and gaining practical insights into the challenges and opportunities of modern software development.
