Master’s students from Lancaster University Leipzig embarked on an educational visit to Smurfit Westrock’s corrugated paper factory in Delitzsch, Germany. This field trip was part of the MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management programme under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr Jan Schoenfelder.

The visit was highlighted by an in-depth, one-hour presentation delivered by Mr. Seidel, the operations manager at Smurfit Westrock. His insights provided the students with a comprehensive overview of the company’s production processes, supply chain logistics, and sustainable manufacturing practices. Mr. Seidel’s expertise and approachable demeanor created an engaging environment, fostering active discussions and knowledge exchange.

Following the presentation, the group was guided on an extensive two-hour tour of the factory. The tour allowed students to observe first-hand the intricacies of corrugated paper production, from raw material processing to the final product. This immersive experience bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, offering valuable perspectives on real-world production, logistics and supply chain operations.

Dr Schoenfelder emphasized the importance of such industry interactions, stating that direct exposure to operational environments is crucial for developing a deeper understanding of logistics complexities and innovations.

Smurfit Westrock, renowned for its commitment to sustainability and efficiency in packaging solutions, provided an ideal setting for the students to explore contemporary challenges and advancements within the industry.
